Scouting in Humberside happens because of volunteers. Full stop.
So today, I just want to say a genuinely massive thank you to every single person who gives their time, energy and patience to make Scouting possible — week in, week out. You’re the people who set up activities after work, plan camps, juggle spreadsheets, wash mugs, fix tents, calm nerves, celebrate achievements, and somehow still manage to make it fun. You make a huge difference to young people and communities across the county.
A little “CLV out and about”
To mark the day (and to say thanks in person), I’ve been out and about visiting groups across the county — a bit of CLV out and about.
And I’ve got to say… it’s one of the best parts of the role. Not because of the tea and biscuits (although that helps), but because seeing Scouting in action reminds you exactly why it matters. Every group has its own vibe, its own traditions, and its own team of volunteers quietly making things happen.
Driffield Scouts: BBQ at the beach
First stop was Driffield Scouts, who had a BBQ at the beach. Proper Scouts energy — good food, great company, and young people getting stuck in. It was one of those moments that sums up Scouting perfectly: simple, outdoors, and full of laughter.
And yes… it was fresh. Let’s call it “character building”. 😉
Nafferton Scouts: Afternoon Tea (slightly warmer!)
Later on, I joined Nafferton Scouts for an Afternoon Tea, which was, thankfully, slightly warmer than the beach. It was a lovely chance to catch up, share a few stories, and spend time with the volunteers who keep things running behind the scenes.
One location was definitely warmer than the other… but both were brilliant in their own way.
The real message
The photos we’ll share with this post are a tiny snapshot of the wider picture: volunteers making time for others, creating opportunities, and helping young people grow in confidence and independence.
So once again — thank you.
Whether you’re a Section Leader, Assistant, Occasional Helper, Trustee, Skills Instructor, Nights Away Adviser, or the person who turns up with the keys and the kettle… you matter. Scouting doesn’t happen without you.
Thank you all,
Gary – Lead Volunteer
