While most were tucked up under duvets last weekend, the Elloughton-cum-Brough Scouts were busy proving that adventure doesn’t have an “off-season.” Setting up base at the scenic Raven Gill Scout Centre in Commondale, our local troop embraced the elements for an unforgettable Winter Camp.
A Basecamp in the Heart of Commondale
Raven Gill provided the perfect backdrop for a weekend of skill-building and camaraderie. Nestled in the North York Moors, the site offered the Scouts a chance to sharpen their outdoor survival skills in true winter conditions. From mastering cold-weather kit prep to keeping spirits high as the temperature dropped, the troop showed exactly what Humberside Scouting is all about: resilience.
Chilly Peaks and Bright Horizons
The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly the expedition across the moors. The group embarked on a chilly but bright hike around the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.
Under a crisp, clear sky, the Scouts navigated the rugged terrain, enjoying panoramic views that only a winter’s day can provide. The biting wind was no match for the group’s energy as they tackled the trails, proving that with the right gear and a bit of “Scout spirit,” there’s no such thing as bad weather.
Winter camps like this one at Raven Gill are more than just a weekend away; they are a vital part of the Scouting journey. They teach:
- Advanced Navigation: Dealing with low-sun glare and changing moorland mist.
- Teamwork: Keeping the group together and motivated in cold conditions.
- Self-Reliance: Managing personal kit to stay warm and dry.

Elloughton-cum-Brough Scouts continue to lead the way in providing young people with opportunities to explore the great outdoors, no matter the season.
A huge thank you to the volunteers at Raven Gill for hosting them and to our dedicated leaders for making this chilly moorland trek a reality!
