RAYWELL – The spirit of Christmas arrived early for the Hessle Scout Group as the Forest Beavers took part in an action-packed, festive-themed residential weekend at Raywell Park. The event, filled with skill-building activities and holiday cheer, saw the young Scouts earning badges and making memories.

A Saturday of Skills and Survival

The weekend kicked off on Saturday with a focus on independence and outdoor skills. As part of their Cook Activity Badge, the Beavers took over the kitchen to prepare their own lunch, masterfully crafting handmade sausage rolls.

Once fueled up, the group headed into the grounds of Raywell Park to test their navigation skills with a round of orienteering. The afternoon turned into a festive workshop where the Beavers demonstrated their dexterity by making:

  • Paracord keyrings and decorative pot bags.
  • Handmade Christmas crackers and ornaments.
  • A mountain of vegetables, prepared by the Beavers themselves for the evening's grand Christmas Dinner.

As night fell, the group gathered for a traditional indoor campfire, filling the hall with songs and laughter, followed by a competitive few rounds of bingo.

Sunday: A Very Merry Gathering

On Sunday, the Forest Beavers were joined by their friends from the Beetle Beavers to participate in the county-wide ‘Christmas Comes to Raywell’ event, hosted by Humberside Scouts.

The park was transformed into a winter wonderland, offering a variety of high-energy activities. The Beavers tested their aim with soft archery and axe throwing, and braved the twists and turns of the popular cave bus. For those looking for a bit of holiday magic, there were face-painting stations and a special craft area to mix up "magic reindeer food" for Christmas Eve.

A Visit from St. Nick

The highlight of the weekend for many was the trek to the woodland grotto to visit Santa Claus. After sharing their Christmas wishes, the Beavers joined hundreds of others for a massive campfire sing-along, ending the weekend on a high note of community and joy.

A spokesperson for Hessle Scout Group noted that the weekend was a fantastic opportunity for the children to build confidence, learn new practical skills, and celebrate the values of Scouting in a festive environment.
