Hedon Scouts enjoyed an unforgettable adventure at Beamish Museum, with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Young Leaders stepping back in time for a trip packed with exploration, learning and plenty of laughter.
The visit gave the young people the chance to discover what life, work and travel were like in the past, while taking part in some brilliant hands-on experiences along the way.
One of the highlights was heading underground into the mine. With hard hats firmly in place, the group experienced a very different side of Beamish — although some looked a little more confident about heading underground than others!
There was also plenty of time to explore the wider museum, travelling around the site and discovering its historic streets, buildings and transport.
The group even encountered some of Beamish’s horses, which provided one of the funnier moments of the trip when they appeared to cause more concern for one of the adult leaders than for any of the young people!
An overnight adventure
The experience didn’t end when the museum closed for the day.
Hedon Scouts also had the unusual opportunity to sleep overnight in Beamish’s Masonic Hall, making the trip even more memorable and certainly very different from an ordinary Scout meeting.
Trips like this are about much more than simply having a fun day out. They give young people opportunities to try something new, develop independence, spend time with friends and learn outside the classroom.
Most importantly, they create the kind of memories that young people can take with them for years to come.
A huge thank you goes to all the volunteer leaders and helpers who gave their time — and sacrificed a comfortable night’s sleep — to make the trip possible.

Adventure, friendship and new experiences are at the heart of Scouting, and Hedon Scouts’ trip to Beamish was a fantastic example of all three.
