A day built for confidence, teamwork and the outdoors

Today, young people from across Humberside came together for the Top Awards Expedition Skills Day — a focused, hands-on event designed to help them prepare for the expedition element of their top awards. Led by experienced volunteers, the day was all about building confidence, sharpening practical skills, and learning how to work effectively as a team in an outdoor environment.

For many, it was a key step on their journey towards completing a major milestone in their Scouting adventure.

What the day focused on

The event covered the core expedition skills needed for success, with plenty of opportunity to practise rather than just listen. Young people rotated through sessions that explored:

  • Route planning and navigation, including map reading and decision-making
  • Campcraft skills, from setting up shelters to organising kit
  • Expedition teamwork, leadership, and communication
  • Safety, self-reliance, and looking after each other outdoors

Sessions were paced to keep things practical and engaging, with volunteers on hand to guide, encourage, and challenge where needed.

Learning by doing

One of the strengths of the day was its emphasis on real-world application. Rather than ticking boxes, participants were encouraged to think through scenarios, solve problems together, and reflect on what worked — and what they would do differently next time.

Mistakes were treated as learning opportunities, and confidence grew steadily as the day progressed. By the end, groups were working more smoothly, communicating more clearly, and showing real progress in their expedition readiness.

Powered by volunteers

Events like this don’t happen without committed volunteers giving their time, skills, and experience. Leaders, instructors, and helpers worked throughout the day to create a supportive environment where young people could push themselves while feeling safe and encouraged.

Their input played a huge part in turning a training day into a meaningful experience.

A solid step towards top awards

For those working towards their top awards, the Expedition Skills Day marked an important moment — bringing together training, teamwork, and confidence ahead of future challenges. It was a reminder that these awards are about more than completion; they’re about growth, resilience, and shared achievement.

The learning from the day will stay with participants long after the kit is packed away.
