At Scouts, we believe in learning by doing, and our youngest members at 1st New Waltham (Grimsby) recently proved that you’re never too young to start building vital life skills.

Last week, the Squirrels Drey traded the scout hut for the supermarket aisles, embarking on a "healthy eating" mission at Morrisons Laceby.

From Healthy Plates to Healthy Shopping

The adventure began a week prior, where the Squirrels spent their session learning about nutrition and designing their own "healthy plates." But rather than just talking about fruit and veg, the leadership team decided it was time for a real-world challenge.

Armed with shopping lists and a squirrel-sized trolley, the group set off to find their ingredients. Supported by the brilliant Squirrel team and a group of parent helpers, the youngsters navigated the store with enthusiasm.

Developing "Skills for Life"

While it looked like a fun trip to the shops, the Squirrels were actually hard at work developing core scouting values:

  • Teamwork: Working together to find every item on the list.
  • Decision Making: Choosing the best produce for their healthy snacks.
  • Confidence: Interacting with the public and navigating a busy community space.

"It was a huge confidence boost and a brilliant real-world learning experience for our youngest members. Our Squirrels took the section’s first-ever shopping trip completely in their stride—we couldn't be prouder!"

A Community Effort

Scouting is all about community connections, and this trip was no exception. We would like to say a massive thank you to Danielle at Morrisons, who went above and beyond to help the Squirrels through the checkout process, making the experience feel safe and special.

We also want to thank the Grimsby public! Many shoppers stopped to say hello and encourage our Squirrels as they mastered the self-checkout and the art of the shopping list.

What’s Next?

The adventure isn't over yet. Now that the ingredients have been sourced, the Squirrels will be heading back to their meeting place next week to prepare and eat their healthy snacks.

It’s just another example of how the Squirrels program in Humberside provides young people aged 4–6 with the chance to explore, learn, and grow.
