Explorers Water Activity Day - 21st September 2024

Saturday 21st September 2024

Bring your Explorer Unit to enjoy a day on the water!

Bring your Explorer Unit to enjoy a day on the water!

During the County Roadshows, Explorer Leaders told us that water activities were an area of the programme that they found most difficult to deliver.

So, we are providing a day of these for you! All you need to do is bring your young people along. There are 3 activities available, including sailing, bell boating and rafting.  We have 3 dates booked with a maximum of 30 Explorers for each session.

Other dates available are:

  • 13th July 2024
  • 27th July 2024

Cost

£22 per Explorer for 3 water activities over the day.

A deposit of £5 per person attending is payable within 28 days of receiving your booking confirmation email. The final payment will need to be made by Friday 10th May 2024.

Bookings

We have 30 places available for each activity day which will be given on a first come first served basis. Leaders who are supervising are not counted in the numbers for the activity and are free of charge.

Please let us know how many Explorers and Leaders from your Unit will be attending by completing the online form here: https://forms.office.com/e/999ksu9T4S

If the event is full for that day, we will offer you the next available day.

What to bring

Participants should be able to swim 50m as per Scout rules. (If you have any non- swimmers who would like to go afloat, please discuss it with us in advance.)

Everyone needs to bring a complete change of clothing and a towel. It is important to wear warm clothing for water activities, as it feels cooler on the water. Green Withens is situated high on the moors and is often colder than less exposed sites. Plenty of warm clothing and a waterproof jacket and over trousers or similar windproof outer garments and a woolly hat are necessary. Old trainers or similar soft footwear, with socks should be worn. Shorty wetsuits may be fine on the beach but are not usually suitable for Green Withens unless worn with other clothing. If it happens to be warm and sunny don’t forget a sunhat and suntan lotion.

There is no drinking water on site, please bring your own drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Although there are toilets and changing rooms, there are no showers.
Groups must to be accompanied by sufficient leaders to meet the correct ratios and are responsible for operating the Scout InTouch scheme. They must have all the relevant contact details and health declarations.

The team leader at Green Withens must be informed of any relevant medical information or special needs.

Getting there

You will need to make your own way there or contact Events@humbersidescouts.org.uk if you would like us to quote for minibus hire.

The activity centre is based at Green Withens Water Activity Centre, Green Withens Reservoir, Sowerby Bridge, HX6 4RH

The Centre is situated off the A672 between Ripponden and Denshaw. From the M62, take junction 22 and follow the signs to Halifax (A672). Drive approximately 400 metres from the junction, and turn left onto a slip road (signposted Green Withens). Once through the gate, follow the track down 700 metres to the centre car park.

Note: If you have a Sat Nav, do not use a postcode for the centre – we’d recommend programming directions to junction 22 of the M62.
