Last weekend, Scouts and Explorers from North Lincolnshire embarked on an unforgettable adventure with the Ocean Youth Trust aboard their sail training yacht, James Cook.

The group travelled to North Shields, where they boarded the yacht in Royal Quays Marina and were split into three watches: Gull, Puffin, and Tern. After receiving essential safety briefings and personal protective equipment, they settled in for their first night aboard.

🚢 Life at Sea

Setting off early on Saturday, the yacht sailed northwards along the east coast under excellent wind conditions — enough to raise three of the four sails. Unlike a typical boat trip, the young people were the crew, taking full responsibility under the guidance of experienced Watch Leaders.

While on watch, Scouts were tasked with:

Keeping a lookout for hazards like lobster pot buoys

Navigating and recording entries in the ship’s logbook

Helming — steering the yacht!

During standby periods, they took on ship duties like:

Preparing and cooking meals

Washing up and cleaning

Supporting the rest of the crew

And during off-watch time, they could relax, rest, or take in the beautiful surroundings — which included sightings of seals, seabirds, and a pod of dolphins. 🐬

That night, the yacht anchored in Alnmouth Bay, where the group rotated shifts for anchor watch, learning yet another layer of seamanship and responsibility.

🌊 Weather Turns — But Spirits Stay Strong

Sunday's return journey proved far more challenging. The wind had picked up to Force 6–7, and the seas turned rough — a true test of resilience. Some of the crew experienced seasickness, but every young person pushed through and fulfilled their duties without complaint.

Back at North Shields, the group helped berth the boat, enjoyed a well-earned lunch, and cleaned and reset the yacht for the next crew.

🏅 Certificates Earned, Memories Made

Each young person earned their Start Sailing certificate, proving their skills, perseverance, and commitment. They represented Scouting with pride and professionalism — true ambassadors of what Scouting is all about.

We hope to run a similar voyage next year — so if you're up for the challenge, keep an eye on the events page!
